The Liard hotsprings were a major highlight of the long Alaska Highway.  The image below contains the GPS location of a scenic and private campsite nearby.  To see the GPS metadata on a map, download the Photo Investigator iOS App.  You can even get directions right to the site, by opening the location in the Maps app from the map view of the Photo Investigator:

Free Campsite on the Alaska Highway, Canada

This was high on my list of favorite spots discovered along the Alaska Highway.  The snow-capped craggy peaks nearby made for a perfect picture frame around bushy meadows, a small lake, and a dirt road in the middle of nowhere.  Check out the location on a map of the image below, using the Photo Investigator App:

45 miles out of Anchorage, this HD view of the Matanuska River prods one to contemplate the immensity of nature.  Head northward from the GPS coordinates in the photo below (of course use the Photo Investigator App to see the image's location on a map), and off the road to the left after a sharp downhill, there is an area with at least 8 campsites and a portable pisser:

Free Campsite in Alaska, Near the Alaska Highway

The picturesque Alaska Highway stretches through Canada to Alaska.  I was lucky to travel this beautiful path through Canadian forest, and psyched to finally reach Alaska after a week.  Of course, the American border crossing guard did his best to make me consider abandoning my own country.  Wouldn't it be great to hear "Welcome home to the USA", instead of being hassled with snide comments?

Free Campsite at the Artic Circle, Alaska

Posted by: The Photo Investigator in Free Campsite 5 years, 7 months ago

The Dalton Highway stretches from Fairbanks, Alaska, to the Artic Ocean, and is the only road which reaches the Artic Ocean in Alaska.  The Alaska Pipeline loosely follows the path of the road all the way to transport oil from the Artic to Valdez.  The Dalton highway was created in order to build the pipeline, and is one of the roughest highways in the world, stretching 300 miles without a gas station.  The photo below contains GPS coordinates to the free campground at the Artic Circle, check out the GPS location and get directions using the iOS Photo Investigator App:
