This is a campsite in Tonto National Forest, off the I-17, between Flagstaff and Phoenix. The entry is a bumpy forest road, with other sites in the vicinity. If you go further into the forest, I'm sure there are much better areas, but this made for a quick free stop on my way through Arizona. An elk ambled right by my site just as I was getting into the tent, which definitely got my blood pumping!
Centered between I-10 and I-8 in Arizona, North of Yuma, the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge is a great spot to get away and camp for free in wide open spaces. The name comes from the King of Arizona mine, as this refuge was the site of many gold mines. You can see some of the old mines here, at a museum, or various closed off mine shafts throughout.
